That may also explain the downward pressure on NITE. A company seeking to acquire NITE at a discount could be discreetly shorting to force the price down.

The money spent to short NITE down (say a million shares a day) would be well worth it to an acquirer if the ultimate NITE sale price is reduced significantly beyond the shorting expenditures.

If this is the case, it is in NITE's best interest to go on the offensive and issue as much positive PR plus CNBC appearances, etc. to buoy share price.

I always remember any time I'm subjected to bizarre trading behavior (like NITE's recent behavior in the face of stellar earnings and forward-looking statements), it is usually for a reason that is not yet apparent, but will be soon. Usually the market overreacts and actually reacts to a reaction.
