I don't know if there is a sale "imminent", but I believe that he was given 3 or 4 quarters to turn this company around. I think that he tried his hardest, but didn't hit the numbers he was supposed to hit by now, therefor causing his resignation.
"Barry Jinks has decided to step down at the end of July to allow a new CEO to take the company to its next level of development." This statement says that he was not capable of doing so (probably voted by the board).
By Jinks resigning, he could persue his entrepreneurial skills, but if he fought it, it would have caused humiliation and he would never land another CEO position again.
