AOL is winning the technology battle over instant messaging but may lose the war as industry pressure grows for a way to allow the hugely popular service become as universal as e-mail. After more than a week of fighting Microsoft Corp. and others AOL executives made their clearest statement yet they will support an industry task force working to develop an open messaging standard. At the same time AOL formed its own advisory committee on the issue composed mainly of executives from companies well-known as Microsoft adversaries including Sun Microsystems, Novell, RealNetworks and Apple Computer. America Online Inc (AOL)

Internet provider AOL Canada and INFOSPACE.COM INC said they signed a deal under which Infospace will provide Canadian business and people directories, as well as mapping services, online for AOL. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. It was not immediately clear how extensive the mapping service would be. AOL Canada, operated by AMERICA ONLINE INC, has more than 130,000 subscribers. InfoSpace.com, based in Redmond, Wash., also offers classified ads, news, stock quotes and TV listings to Internet service providers. (Reuters 02:42 PM ET 08/02/99)

An alliance between SUN MICROSYSTEMS INC and AMERICA ONLINE INC's Netscape said it expects a 75% increase in customers in Asia in its 1999/2000 (July-June) financial year. "We expect growth rate somewhere in the region of 75% year-on-year throughout the region," Stephen Furney-Howe, vice president for the Sun-Netscape Alliance in Asia Pacific, told a news conference. He said there were "hundreds of customers" in Asia using the two companies' electronic commerce products, which were grouped together last month under a single brand called i-Planet. Online news site MSNBC.com said it signed a deal to provide news content for high speed Internet service providers Road Runner, Sprint High Speed DSL and EXCITE@HOME CORP. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. MSNBC.com will provide all three broadband services with streaming video from NBC News operations. The term broadband refers to high-speed, high capacity telecommunications lines that are able to handle voice, data video services at high speeds. Sprint DSL is part of global communications company SPRINT CORP. MSNBC is a partnership between GENERAL ELECTRIC CO's NBC and MICROSOFT CORP. (Reuters 12:58 PM ET 08/02/99)

Compaq Computer (CPQ)

Security experts have acknowledged flaws in MICROSOFT CORP's Office software suite and some newer COMPAQ COMPUTER and HEWLETT PACKARD CO computers that could allow hackers to access and alter data in millions of computers via e-mail or rogue Web sites. The vulnerabilities, which affect computers running Microsoft's Windows operating system and Internet Explorer browser in combination with other programs, are invisible to antivirus programs. The flaws were reported in Saturday's New York Times. A Microsoft spokeswoman said last evening that "no customers have been affected so far." (WSJ)

Dell Computer (DELL)

DELL COMPUTER plans to buy a 5% stake in Norwegian firm Fast Search & Transfer ASA, a search engine for the Internet, for 257 mln Norwegian crowns, Fast said. Fast Search said that Dell would make the investment as part of a memorandum of understanding signed on Monday on the promotion, marketing, sale and distribution of products. The firms aimed to reach a final deal within 45 days. Fast on Monday unveiled what it calls "The World's Biggest Search Engine" which it says is can scan 200 mln of the Web's 800 mln pages. INTEL CORP said on Sunday it was investing in a new joint venture with Hong Kong-based Pacific Century Group in an effort to bring high-speed Internet access to Asia. Under the deal, Intel's existing joint venture with Pacific Century, known as Pacific Convergence Corp., would be folded into a new company, Pacific Century CyberWorks, Claude Leglise, vice president of Intel's home products group, said in an interview. TRICOM SA soared on news that computer giant INTEL CORP would invest US$50 million and inject assets into Tricom. At 1055 Hong Kong time (0255 GMT), Tricom shares were up HK$0.22 or 22.11 percent at HK$1.16, while the underlying Hang Seng Index was up 25.25 points or 0.19% at 13,212.11. Microsoft Corp (MSFT)

Bill Gates, the world's richest man and MICROSOFT's founder, plans to become the biggest charity donor in history with a 65 billion pound ($100 billion) give-away, the billionaire's father told the Sunday Times. Gates Senior, the namesake father who manages the William H. Gates Foundation, told the paper his son planned to donate his fortune to help rid the planet of diseases including Aids and malaria. Microsoft Corp (MSFT)

The percentage of computer users having a favorable image of MICROSOFT CORP appears to have slipped over the past two years, the New York Times reported on Monday. Citing a New York Times/CBS poll conducted from July 17-19, the paper said 60% of the people who use a computer at work or at home said they had a favourable opinion of Microsoft. A poll last year found 67% of computer users had a favorable opinion of the company, the daily reported. Meanwhile, the paper said 73% of computer users held a favorable view of Microsoft in an October 1997 Gallup poll that posed the same question to respondents. Prudential Securities initiated coverage of the new tracking stocks from disk-drive maker QUANTUM CORP, which trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbols HDD and DSS. Sun Microsystems Inc (SUNW)

SUN MICROSYSTEMS INC said it is working on a new family of computer chips that will eventually power media-rich consumer devices such as video game machines, handheld computers, and screen phones. Sun plans to unveil its design for its new media chips, called the MAJC (pronounced magic) Instruction Set Architecture at the Hot Chips Conference, a symposium on high-performance chips at Stanford University later this month. Sun's new chip architecture will be used to create general purpose "convergence" processors, chips which will run applications that blend communications, video, sound and computing functions. Texas Instruments (TXN)

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS said it extended its offer to buy INTEGRATED SENSOR SOLUTIONS INC from July 30 until August 13 as it awaits approval from German regulators. The Dallas-based Texas Instruments has made an $8.05 per share cash tender offer for all of the issued and outstanding shares of common stock of electronic-control and automotive sensor maker Integrated Sensor. This is the sixth time Texas Instruments has extended its offer to buy Integrated Sensor, which has manufacturing facilities in San Jose, Calif., and Dresden, Germany.
