OT Far less culturally desolate than 20 years ago, when we first located here. (That can be said of most places, actually.) At first, I can remember being embarrassed to take out-of-town guests to eat any place besides SF. I remember the opening of the Lion and Compass in Sunnyvale being a big deal because then there was one (supposedly) nice place to go for a business lunch or dinner. Then downtown Palo Alto went trendier, downtown Mtn. View revived, downtown San Jose renaissanced, and now dieting is my biggest concern (of course middle age has nothing to do with it <g>).

To a lesser extent, the same phenomenon can be seen in the arts. But proximity to SF solves the remainder of that problem. And there's plenty right here for all but the most serious aficionado.

Hey, and don't knock LA. <g> You'd be surprised about that city, but that's a story for someone else to tell.
