I think this is one of the main reasons why most investors underperform the indexes -- an index fund would have mercilessly purged a loser like SGI, whereas individual investors hang on to it, because they think they are knowledgeable about the company or the technology or the management etc. etc. Of course, some people hang on in the hope of breaking even! A couple more investments like this and they will underperform the indexes too! ;-)
