I don't think the global corporations see China as anything but a very large market with lots of needs waiting to be filled. Taiwan, on the other hand, is somewhere on the scale between 'low-cost competitor' and 'negligible'.

So, human-rights issues or not, I'd be pretty surprised if our stalwart congressmen & senators, all of whom are on somebody's corporate payroll, don't do whatever it takes to prevent Taiwan from getting in the way of business. Darn right this won't be another Kosovo.


Great summary, QuikSand. These are interesting times.

At any rate, at least we (the West) got the satisfaction of getting to lob a missle into a Red Chinese embassy (under the direction of an impeached President, no less) before the end of the millenium. And <bonus> seeing the Dow yawn it's way through the trading day without more than a glance over to CNN.
