Red Hat Rolls Out Linux E-Commerce Server

Red Hat Inc. this week began shipping a Linux-based
commerce server that brings together a wide range of
technologies.

The Red Hat Linux E-Commerce Server includes Red Hat
Linux 6.0, an Apache Web server and RSA 128-bit
encryption, among other features.

Red Hat is focusing mainly on ISPs and small-business users as
the prime customers for the commerce server, according to a
Red Hat spokeswoman.

The Red Hat Linux E-Commerce Server also includes the
Apache Active Server Page module; Distributed Authoring
and Versioning modules for development on multiple
platforms; the Netscape Roaming Module to enable the use of
the Apache Web server as a Netscape Roaming Access server;
the Squid proxy and cache server; and the Webalyzer Web
server log tool.

Despite the popularity of Linux and Apache, both open-source
software, Red Hat has a long way to go before its commerce
server approaches the level of interoperability and out-of-the-
box application functionality of products like Microsoft Site
Server or IBM Net.Commerce, analysts said. --Richard
