JR - thanks a bunch for shedding some light on that! It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next year or two. If you are interested in seeing what kind of applications have been developed for AltiVec, follow this URL and scroll down to the bottom half of page 3 where the description for TeraCom starts (it has subsequently been renamed TeraMedia):

Re. "Hence my guess is IBM will supply AAPL with faster (server) G 3s , help MOT with its AAPL (workstation) G4s (128 bit but a 64 bit bus) then quietly provide AAPL with (slower) 64 bit G4s ".

In my opinion, if IBM had embraced the G4 design (incorporating ALTIVEC), built the chip when it originally taped out (late 97), and
applied the proper resources for follow on deign passes, you would
have seen 550MHZ G4s in boxes by 1st quarter 99. Sadly, none of this was done. In my opinion, IBM wrote off APPL in 97 and simply wasn't interested. They probably only now realize how wrong they were.
Meanwhile, MOTO stumbles along with either problems with the design,
problems with COPPER BEOL, problems attaining high MHz or a combination of all three. I find it truly amazing how these two
companies have let APPLE down. The highest end G4s would command PREMIUM prices for whichever company could supply them.
