FROM BRIEFING today:

Reader's 10 - Revisions
23-Jul-99 04:48 ET

When the year began I polled our readers to ask them for their top three tech stocks for the year. I then tabulated the results and listed the ten stocks which received the most votes, creating Briefing.com's first "Reader's 10." For the first six-months of 1999, Briefing.com's "Reader's 10" portfolio returned 22.7%, well above the 13.2% return generated by the S&P 500, but slightly below the 25% gain registered by the Nasdaq Composite. In early July, on our Tech Stocks Page, I polled our readers again, giving them a chance to tweak their portfolio at mid-year. After going through over 600 email messages, the results are finally in.

I wasn't at all surprised to discover that the first half's big losers, Compaq (CPQ) -44.6% and 3Com (COMS) -40.3%, missed the cut. I was surprised, however, that MCI/Worldcom (WCOM) was jettisoned despite returning a respectable 23.6%. Taking their places are CMGI (CMGI), Inktomi (INKT) and Qualcomm (QCOM). As for the other seven, only the order of preference changed, with America Online (AOL) narrowly edging Cisco (CSCO) as your favorite, while Dell Computer (DELL) slipped from the number three choice to number eight. Without further delay, here is the revised "Reader's 10," listed in order of preference.
