I am afraid that it was avoidable. I find the suggestion that he was accommodating the wishes of others interesting, although who can say. I know that I, usually a careful driver, once made a terrible mistake in judgment, overestimating how well my will could overcome exhaustion, and I ended up in an accident that could have been much more serious. Death, to myself or others, would have been too severe a punishment for my folly, and it is ill- becoming of some people to act as if John "got what was coming to him"....
