It's also poor taste, IMO, to make it out to be some Great American Tragedy. It's not, any more than any other avoidable fatal accident. Treat it as any other death, people will be sober and respectful. Make it into a circus, and people are going to laugh. If we're making fun of anyone, it's the people who blow the whole thing into something it's not.

I read with some astonishment that this man, who had never attempted or accomplished anything of note in his life, was actually considering a run for the US Senate. The worst part of that is that he would probably have won, purely on the basis of his name. Imagine having someone sitting in the select 100 of the nation whose sole qualification and accomplishment was George. At least we will be spared that.

I recall, after sneering at the Diana circus, being told that I suffered from a romantic deficiency. I recall responding that I saw nothing at all romantic in the notion that birth or marriage can make a person better than everybody else. I don't see how anybody who believes that honor should be conferred according to merit can fail to be somewhat disgusted at the accolades and attentions that are being bestowed on one whose sole achievement in life was being born to the right parents.
