I imagine there are potential civil penalties for his sister-in-law's family, and maybe his wife's family, to extract if they want them. Of course, though, they won't.

The civilian authorities should require his estate to pay the costs of the search and rescue. But they, too, won't. The completely innocent taxpayers will pay it all, the responsible party will pay none, because he was famous and politically connected.

Too bad that's not a joke.
