You are correct the electrochemical reaction of the hydrocarbons at the "hot zone" entrance of the cell breaks the fuel down to it's elemental stage. As noted in the sciences the solid oxide fuel cell utilizes all of the fuel including carbon monoxide, and it is not necessary to eliminate the 'smell' of gas . Also it does not expel any of the pollutants like the PEM reformers and the ion charge carrier is oxygen not hydrogen . In summary SOFC technology enables the SAFE delivery of hydrocarbon fuels to the cell with the least amount of complications , and will not require an estimated 200 billion dollar infrastructure change in the States alone. The amount of regulatory changes, insurance underwriting, and upgrading of trade skills are minimal with SOFC's.

P.S. Thanks for not trying to sell any of your products on this thread and before you do please note the charge carriers are oxygen ions. This means the cells will be able to interface with existing fuel management systems that use zirconium based oxygen sensors. In other words the amount oxygen is what will determine the control of fuel, along with other existing and proven 100% safety shut off flame safeguard controls.
