The answer, of course, is that Junglee had heavy cash investment from Kleiner Perkins partners roughly days before Amazon "decided" to buy them out.

The technology was of no importance. Amazon could care less.

Lining the pockets of a KP partner was the first order of business.

They've only done this what, 3 or 4 times now? You'd think people would catch on by now.

Meanwhile, the Shop the Web product "has been discontinued" at Amazon, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, although the Web page remains. "The supporting staff has been re-assigned to other projects within the company," the source said.

This is difficult for me to believe. I attended the Amazon.com shareholders meeting held here in Seattle a couple months ago.

In the Q&A, Jeff Bezos answered a question from a shareholder about Shop the Web. My recollection is that Jeff Bezos made very encouraging remarks about Shop the Web... gave me the impression (and I believe many others at the meeting) that Shop the Web would be BIG... it's what I reported back to Go2Net.

John Doerr from KP was sitting in the front row.
