They need to stay 12-18 months ahead of the competition. If they were to squeeze out a profit now they would be in the thrall of the analysts and the game would be meeting the whisper number instead of executing their business model.

Remember last December.. everyone said they could never make it because margins on books are so narrow! BUT many saw their business model and processes could work for other products. Now they have an auction site, toys and tech.
They want to be online what Wallmart is offline.

I have used them and I think they are great. I had a problem once and they answered the phone right away. They are obsessively committed to CUSTOMER SERVICE. Only the new companies can hope to use tech. to deliver customer service. Have you noticed what customer service is like at your bank or health provider or insurance company or phone company?? It is torture.

I was not a fan of Bezos at first but since I have been follwing him he seems to have delived everything he has promised.

These new online companies are using their cash flow instead of debt to grow. It is a totally new concept. I think eventually they will benefit because they are not sensitive to interest rates. In theory, these companies stock should not be battered by Greenspan but I don't think everyone has caught on yet. Once they do....look out!
JMHO

PS used to own AMZN. Don't have it right now.
