* Sun Microsystems (SUNW) reported a FY99 4Q net of $0.48 up from
$0.35 in FY98 4Q. The First Call consensus estimate was $0.46.

* Gateway's (GTW) 2Q net earnings rose to $0.56 from $0.38 in the year
ago quarter, beating the First Call consensus estimate by 2 cents.

* Drug giant Merck (MRK) turned in an in-line 2Q, reporting earnings of
$0.61 versus $0.54 in 2Q98.

* Quantum Corp (QNTM) became the latest in a string of disk-drive
makers to disappoint the Street. The firm booked a 2Q net of $0.05,
versus year-ago earnings of $0.02. The results fell significantly
short of the First Call consensus estimate of $0.10.

* Halliburton's (HAL) 2Q earnings before items declined to $0.12 from
$0.55 but beat the Street's expectations for earnings of $0.05.
Including a $32 million one-time gain, HAL's earnings were $0.19.

* Swedish telecommunications firm, Ericsson (ERICY) reported lower
than expected 1H earnings totaling SEK4.26 billion, below the consensus
analyst forecast of SEK5.01 billion. Despite the shortfall, the stock
was trading higher in Stockholm as many analysts felt its recent sell-off
had been overdone. Ericsson issued an upbeat outlook for 2000.

* First Data Corp (FDC) earned $0.42 before items in 2Q versus $0.36
in 2Q98. A survey of 14 analysts by First Call forecast the firm
would earn $0.44 in 2Q. First Data booked a total of $8.1 million in
charges which raised its quarterly results to $0.44.

* Reebok (RBK) booked a 2Q profit of $0.08, down from $0.11 in
2Q98 and well short of the First Call consensus estimate of $0.12.

* Air Products (APD) reported an in-line FY99 4Q, earnings $0.48
before charges compared to $0.56 in the year-ago quarter. The firm
took a one time charge of 4 cents per share, lowering the quarterly
results to $0.44.

* Eastman Chemical's (EMN) 2Q net fell to $0.54 in 2Q from $1.21 in
2Q98 but beat the Street's expectation of $0.49 in earnings.
