Speaking of Liftoff!(Sunday July 25 6:29 AM ET) Boeing Launches Satellite

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - For the third time in six weeks, Boeing has successfully launched a quartet of Globalstar communication satellites.

The Delta II rocket blasted off at 3:46 a.m. Sunday and placed the four satellites in orbit - boosting the number of Globalstar satellites to 32.

''We've been able to launch one-fourth of the Globalstar satellites into orbit during this time, and we look forward to continued success,'' said Darryl Van Dorn, a Delta program director.

Boeing plans to launch another Delta with four more Globalstar satellites next month.

Globalstar, based in San Jose, Calif., plans to begin providing wireless telephone service this fall. Altogether, 48 satellites are planned.

Sunday's launch cost about $115 million.

The Globalstar consortium of 12 companies was founded by Loral Space and Communications Ltd. and Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq:QCOM - news)
