Intel forum to demo home network, describe guide to using Merced A service of Semiconductor Business News, CMP Media Inc. Story posted 10:30 a.m. EST/7:30 a.m., PST, 7/23/99 By David Lammers PALM SPRINGS, Calif. ( ChipWire/EET) -- Intel Corp. will describe its latest position on chip-set support for the PC133 SDRAM memory architecture, provide a practical guide to using the Merced processor and demonstrate its vision of the connected home at the Fall Intel Developer Forum, scheduled for Aug. 31-Sept. 2 in Palm Springs. The focus of the forum in years past has been on creating a road map for personal computer hardware. This year's gathering will take a much broader view, reflecting Intel's diversification efforts. The theme of Fall IDF is "Advancing the Internet," and will include Intel's view of how desktop systems and IA-based servers can be connected to e-business services. Pat Gelsinger, vice president of the desktop division at Intel, said about 2,500 developers are expected to attend the three-day event. The three main "drill down" topics start with how to implement systems with the Merced processor, including details on the various operating systems, the use of software-development tools and "cookbooks" on porting to the new architecture. A second major track will involve a "full disclosure" of the 820 chip set, otherwise known as Camino, and Intel's position on the PC133 memory architecture. Benchmarks of the Rambus memory technology will be presented as Intel shows off its "tour de force" desktop, based on a 133-MHz system bus, Rambus memories and the other advances in the most advanced desktops as envisioned by Intel. The forum also will include a demonstration of "the connected house," including Intel's plans for the "Easy PC" and how broadband cabling can be brought into the home to connect appliances, Webpads and computers. And a series of debates is planned, including non-Intel participants. Gelsinger said Intel is expanding the role of third-party vendors at the showcase portion of IDF, with 70 companies represented. Craig Barrett, Intel chief executive officer, will give the kickoff keynote address. 204.247.196.14
