Vari-L Company Awarded Two United States Patents

Technology Decreases Production Costs, Improves Manufacturing Efficiency For Components Used In Dual-Band Subscriber Applications

DENVER, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Vari-L Company, Inc. (Nasdaq: VARL - news), a leading provider of advanced components for the wireless telecommunications industry, today announced it has received notice of allowance from the United States Patent Office for its 12th U.S. patent, entitled ''Switched Mode Oscillator,'' and 13th U.S. patent, entitled ''Passive Switched Oscillator Output Circuit.''

Both patents apply to critical improvements of the Company's dual-band Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs), which are expected to be in increasingly high demand for next-generation, dual-band subscriber applications, such as wireless phones and pagers, and related infrastructure.

The Switched Mode Oscillator allows the VCOs to operate on two significantly different frequencies with only a single transistor, which should contribute to a meaningful decrease in production costs. The Passive Switched Oscillator Output Circuit enables two oscillators to be integrated into a single unit with a minimum of added circuitry, again reducing implementation costs and reducing component size.

Dave Sherman, president and CEO, said, ''These patents put Vari-L in an excellent position to capitalize on the enormous consumer demand anticipated for high-performance, dual-band subscriber products. With these and other recent innovations aimed at subscriber markets, Vari-L should be able to successfully compete for business on the basis of cost, size, power consumption and -- most importantly -- quality.

''The Company has now earned a total of nine patents since the beginning of 1997, many of which cover technology significantly improving our subscriber products and the methods by which they are manufactured,'' Sherman added. ''Our engineers are doing a tremendous job keeping the Company at the forefront of innovation and are a major reason behind Vari-L's rapid growth.''

Through its headquarters in Denver, Vari-L designs, manufactures and markets radio- and microwave-frequency signal source and processing components used in the wireless telecommunications industry. Vari-L's patented products are used in a variety of commercial, subscriber and military/aerospace applications, including emerging digital and broadband communications technologies. Vari-L serves a diverse customer base comprised of some of the world's leading technology companies, including California Microwave, Ericsson, Harris, Hughes, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Lucent Technologies, Mitsubishi, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Samsung, Siemens, Stanford Telecom and Wireless Access.
