U.S. seeks "better atmosphere" for China WTO talks

By Paul Eckert

(excerpts)

BEIJING, July 27 (Reuters) - Washington is seeking a "better atmosphere" for resumption of World Trade Organisation talks, U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce David Aaron said on Tuesday as he began a visit to Beijing to discuss bilateral trade issues.

Aaron, said Beijing's decision to invite him pointed to a gradual resumption of ruptured ties.

"What I'm here for primarily is to resume the dialogue that was interrupted and has been dormant since the unfortunate bombing of the Chinese embassy," he told reporters.

He called the invitation "a positive step that we hope will create a better atmosphere for the other decisions that they need to make concerning WTO."

Aaron, who said his one-day visit would focus on bilateral agreements reached earlier this year on opening China's telecommunications and insurance market to U.S. firms, said time was tight if China wanted to join the WTO this year.
