Of course, I just didn't want to respond directly to the teenager, because it would be like trying to explain why the country went mad over Marilyn Monroe, or Betty Grable.

The country went through horrible pain when JFK was killed, and it brought tears to the eyes of the nation to see the little boy saluting his dead father.

They don't want to believe that the same boy, now a grown man of 38, made a horrible judgement error, which caused not only his untimely death, but also the lives of these two young women;
they simply do not want to believe it.

The country was once fascinated with the Kennedy's.

Perhaps the best way to explain it in today's terms to a 15 year old, would be to compare it to thehome run race between McGwire and Sosa?

What else is there in today's times that can explain how a fever once gripped a nation?
