The world's top direct seller of personal computers will invest 110 million francs ($17.6 million) to build a new Home & Small Business Center, charged with coordinating computer sales via telephone or Internet, French daily Le Monde said. ''The investment...is part of our global strategy for development in this segment of a dynamic market,'' said Paul Bell, senior vice president of the service. ''With the installation of this site, Dell is well positioned to reap profits from the large opportunities for growth in southern Europe.'' By adding 500 new employees to the 300 already in the Mediterranean coastal city of Montpellier, Dell aims to increase ''significantly'' its electronic computer sales, to account for 50 percent of its overall activity by the end of 2000, the company said. In France currently, Dell generates on average more than 2 million francs in sales per day via Internet, seven days a week. Montpellier, population 207,996, was chosen for its proximity to Italy and Spain, a high concentration of qualified labor, especially in engineering and sales, and also local state aid of about 27 million francs.
