daffodil, read the lantern's 'fine print' sticker. the power consumption should be listed in amps per hour rating.

then go to your battery of choice and see how many amps they will produce.

it is standard in the industry to rate everything dc powered in amps per hour.

then it is a simple math problem.
divide your battery's or batteries' capacity into the per hour rating on the lantern. then you will get how many hours you will get from this device.

that is why the 50,000 hours from the LED flashlight baldy mentioned a few posts earlier is so fantastic.

you could wire it to an excitable gerbils' wheel. of course, since they are a nocturnal animals, that would mean you'd have light when you most likely didn't want it.

maybe you could make a cover to put over the gerbils' cage in the daytime, fooling them into thinking it is nighttime, and THEN they would provide you the re-charging function.

on a more serious note, there is a windup flashlight for $7 available currently on ebay that is made/imported from russia. maybe we should all get those. and getgerbils.
