Craig,

I also doubt that SNDK will want to produce its own digital camera line. I think they are comfortable being the market leader in flash memory. Period. Adding a digital camera line will just be a headache for them.

Craig and Thread,

from Audible.com

Extended storage capabilities: The AudiblePlayer holds 1 hour of audio for every 2MB of available Palm-size PC memory - either external or internal. For example, with a 24MB compact flash memory card, you can store up to 12 hours of audio programming.

I think they are getting the picture now.

Craig, thanks for the link on Foveon camera systems. Almost too much of a good thing! The reason I suggested that SNDK might want to create its own brand of cameras and MP3 players is that by doing so, they can improve their margins. Supplying CF to camera and MP3 player manufacturers puts them into the category of OEM suppliers. Providing their own retail products gives them an opportunity to get extra margins on the CF. As an example of this strategy, Kodak digital cameras are made in Japan by Chinon, a company in which Kodak has a majority of ownership. The only thing made by Kodak is the charge coupled device (CCD), which has been better quality than most of the competition, until recently. If I were SanDisk, now that they are generating a really good cash flow from both sales and royalties, I would look around for a good, but not well recognized camera and lens manufacturer and put together a package that could be distributed exclusively through places like Ritz Camera Centers, a nationwide chain.
