Another integral part of my "take" is RR's reaction to the December '85 election here, which absolutely everybody, including a Republican-led US observer's mission that entered the country with a clear pro-Marcos slant, reported as being wildly and grotesquely fraudulent, with massive cheating by the administration party. RR, when he was finally forced to comment, said something to the effect that some fraud may have occurred on both sides, but that we should respect the official count, put the whole thing behind us, etc. This did little for the American image in the Philippines. The word on the street in Manila at the time was that the remarks were off the cuff and in blatant disregard of the State/CIA briefings, and that the entire American mission was outraged. I don't blame them; it was not an easy time to be an American here. I got so tired of trying to explain that I started introducing myself as a Canadian.
