MICROSOFT CFO Greg Maffei said late Thursday the company's
research and development expenses would rise to about $3.8 billion
in fiscal 2000 from $3.1 billion in the year just ended. He also
told financial analysts at an annual meeting with them that sales
and marketing expenses would rise about $1 billion this year, or
31 percent over last year's $3.23 billion. (Reuters 07:59 PM ET

* MICROSOFT CORP executives tried to rein in bullish expectations
at their annual meeting with financial analysts on Thursday but
appeared to make little headway after another year of strong
growth for the software giant. An instant poll of some 300
analysts, reporters and others taken at the end of the daylong
meeting found that 40%, a plurality, expected revenue growth of
25% or more in the coming year, compared with company guidance of
less than 20%.
That was down only slightly from 44% in a poll
taken at the beginning of the day, during which executives warned
of uncertainties in the year ahead, including an expected slowdown
in personal computer sales growth. (Reuters 03:06 AM ET 07/23/99)
