i have immediate family who lives in the bellevue suburb of seattle. they would arm-wrestle you to the table-top in a simple wrist flick over your wrong thinking, and elevation of washington state to some sort of model example.

there are no strides in food inventory availability in washington state
there are no strides in sheltering modifications for non-electric dependency
there are no strides in safe water availability let alone in bulk,
there are no strides in alternatives to their mass transit in washington,
there are no strides in job security, especially in the seattle area, home to boeing

there is no manifestation trickling down to the individual benefit level that makes washington residents any better prepared for y2k than my southern state.

my relatives would point out to you with blinding speed that you can't eat a y2k compliant governmental accounting system,
nor can you wear a telephone dial tone if they do suceed in keeping one.
and with equal dexterity, they would rapidly point out that there is no job security where there are no jobs, due to power failures on a massive scale, and redeployment of what hydro power might remain to such areas as military defense of level one of military targets in and around seattle.

and who needs y2k compliant service providers such as property casualty insurance or hairdressers to survive? i'd rather own some y2k complaint scissors in the latter case. :)

one last point: i've never heard my relatives quote governor gary locke as publically declaring he has delayed the pacific northwest normal, pass closing snowy winter weather because washington is so y2k prepared.

while you may have to depend upon reports by subordinates and validation by outside agencies to mark minute progress in your corner of IT hell, don't insult the rest of those who actually live way out there in washington to feel all cozy and safe because of some url you dug up.

btw, i am still waiting to learn what you expect your job title to be in february or is it march 2000. got any contingency plans for an unemployed future?

<all of us, from Ken to Cheeky Kid--are making guesses based upon the best information available to us, filtered through our own experiences. We all have different personal situations and local states of readiness that will make rational different responses to Y2K. Some areas may experience severe disruption, while others may not be affected at all>

I agree generally with this, with the following exceptions:

...All areas will be affected, even if indirectly, due to CASCADING
(both forward and backward, even cross-cascading) effects from those areas that are severely affected, espically economically, at the absolute minimum.

...Thus, all of us, repeat, all of us will absolulely be affected, espically economically, at the absolute minimum.

....I don't agree with your word "guess". My conclusions and predictions are based on a logical analysis, deductions, and
extrapolations, and further, predicated on envisioning all reasonable-case senarios.

You are correct, obviously, in that no one knows, or can know with certainty, before the fact.

All we can do is assign DEGREES OF PROBABILITY to various potential senarios, based on WHAT WE HAVE STUDIED, AND HOW WE ANALYZE SUCH DATA, AND OUR SKILLS OF DATA AND LOGIC ANALYSIS,and EXTRAPOLATIONS on them, minus emotional barriers blocking such.
