Paul,
There will come a day when you get disgusted with the generally mediocre quality of photofinishing service - scratches, dust, etc. This shows up mainly on enlargements, so if you are just an occasional photographer, it won't be of great concern. I must say, given that I have 2 grandchildren and a 90-year old mother who monitors her e-mail daily, I am beginning to take to the idea of sending her the latest photos from my Coolpix, and she's becoming equally enthusiastic about seeing the latest results, rather than waiting for prints in the snail mail. It's hard to beat Olympus quality lenses and the sharp pictures they produce. But I guess I can make some compromises here for the features that are possible with digital. Of course, anyone with a conventional camera could get a scanner, but a good scanner rivals a digital camera in price.
