Latest in Network Associates Ambitious Assault on E-mail Borne Viruses

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA - news) today announced its new version of GroupShield for Exchange, the latest effort in the company's assault on e-mail borne viruses. As the only groupware anti-virus product to employ powerful ''double heuristics'' technology with its ViruLogic feature, GroupShield for Exchange now detects previously unknown viruses with pinpoint accuracy.

Most anti-virus offerings employ traditional virus signature file matching, and single heuristic scanning which identifies new or unknown viruses based on virus-like behavior. Because heuristic scanning can burden users with false positive alerts, this type of detection is often disabled, leaving systems susceptible to any new virus. With its new ViruLogic technology, GroupShield for Exchange delivers ''double heuristic'' scanning which eliminates these false positives and increases the accuracy with which unknown viruses are detected.

Double heuristics eliminates false positives through new cutting edge virus analysis technology that employs both positive and negative heuristics, enabling organizations to scan for viruses on two levels. Firstly, the scanning engine will search for legitimate virus-like behavior, such as unprompted modification of files, invocation of email clients or other means of self-propagation. Simultaneously, the engine will also search for non-virus-like behavior which indicates that the system is functioning normally and reaffirms the absence of any viruses. Based on this double heuristic analysis, the scanning engine can catch new viruses while avoiding the cost and time associated with addressing the ''false positives'' that can result from the inefficiencies of less evolved scanning engines. The new version of GroupShield also includes a new ''VirusLock'' feature to protect against re-infection from email-borne viruses that can lie dormant in private folders.

''With viruses increasingly spreading via email and the Internet, protection on the groupware server is no longer an alternative, but a necessity,'' said Dave Malcolm, Group Product Manager, Microsoft Corp. ''Network Associates is helping to ensure that Microsoft Exchange users have one of the most comprehensive solutions for protecting against virus invasion on their groupware servers with the new version of GroupShield for Exchange.''

To mitigate against the collaborative nature of groupware environments and their ability to quickly spread computer viruses, the GroupShield for Exchange product provides Exchange users with a proven solution that is endorsed by Microsoft. With GroupShield for Exchange, customers can quickly resolve virus outbreaks at the Exchange server level, before viruses have an opportunity to proliferate and infect client desktops. With support from the world's largest virus research organization, Network Associates' AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team), a division of NAI Labs, users are also assured the most up to date cleaning and detection support available.

GroupShield for Exchange features include:

ViruLogic -- Network Associates' "double heuristics" technology analyzes
virus logic by employing both negative and positive heuristics, enabling
organizations to catch the rising number of email-borne viruses and
variants such as the ExploreZip.worm, without causing false positives
generally associated with such technologies.

VirusLock -- Unique feature that scans every email for viruses, even
during peak mail periods. When enabled VirusLock closes a significant
hole currently present in other Exchange anti-virus packages stopping all
email borne threats before they reach the desktop.

GroupShield Client Agent -- The GroupShield product's exclusive scanning
feature protects users from inadvertently re-introducing virus infections
from old emails that may have been saved in private folders thus stopping
future virus flare-ups.

Native Exchange Interface -- Offers easy yet powerful management without
requiring Exchange administrators to learn a new interface. The native
GroupShield interface also allows secure remote access for control anytime
from anywhere.

GroupShield for Exchange is the groupware component for Microsoft Exchange of Network Associates' award-winning Total Virus Defense (TVD) suite and is available as both a stand-alone product or as part of the TVD suite. TVD provides complete anti-virus protection at the desktop, file server, groupware server and Internet gateway. got a giggle out of this ....

So if you're looking to play a takeover, you're thinking, Hey, it could be. Maybe. But if you own Network Associates at 60 from back in April, you're thinking, Please, God. Get me out at 30, and I'll never visit Bondage.com again.
