I called Chase Credit card services today to ask about online bill presentment. The rep said because I was not a Chase online banking customer, I could not receive my credit card statement online. He told me any other system was considered "too great a security risk," but they were working on a system that soon would allow me to participate in bill presentment. Chase Credit card, of course, is available through Checkfree's E-Bill. Chase, though, does not yet offer E-Bill. This interaction left me concerned. The banks can take advantage of their millions of customer relationships and trusted financial services status to talk down the safety and reliability of Checkfree's system. I am starting to agree that branding will be important for Checkfree. That branding must create an indelible association between Checkfree and safe e-commerce.
