Aol is fighting these battles because the competitors are finally waking up. It's going to get tougher and tougher. MSFT must be furious that AOL is using unix in some of the computers they are giving away with the AOL ISP contract. AOL has now got a box component and a software component. Remember, as you parse the numbers according to technology (connectivity), you forget about the consumer/business segments. Aol already knows which type of customer is the most profitable and their plans will be to market the HECK out of the customer who will bring the fastest/most money. This is not just engineering and distribution. AOL is a MARKETING MACHINE! AOL knows where to put their efforts!
