One additional item on the kiosk idea:

The cost of operating a kiosk in a retail environment may demand that the kiosk serve as more than just a place for distributing packages. In other words, Amazon might actually have to sell items at the kiosk - they would either have to have items on display, or computer terminals through which customers could order items via the web site - or both. I see this as working to increase the potential cost of a kiosk - and in expanding the functionality of a kiosk into a full-blown retail space.

Eric,

You write excellent posts and make a good analysis. I never had heard about Amazon having intentions to have a kiosk. I doubt this is true.

There may be some confusion. Amazon may intend to have terminals in brick and mortar locations that are logged onto the Amazon shopping site and will not permit one to go elsewhere on the internet. In this way, a customer can order from Amazon while they are out shopping. This is the customer that does not have decent internet access at home due to a slow connection, no net device at all, etc. I believe the return of product and the obtaining of product at a kiosk is rediculous.

My take is someone leaked a discussion with management at Amazon about a Kiosk. Then The Street.com read more into its use than was intended.
