Dataquest Ranks LSI Logic as #1 Market Share Leader in Merchant ASIC And Standard Cell Markets Vertical Market Focus and Technology Leadership Drive Results MILPITAS, Calif., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) has been named the number one worldwide merchant market share leader for both standard cells and total ASIC products. Dataquest, a market research division of the GartnerGroup, released the 1998 rankings in a recent report, "1998 ASIC Market Share: The Photo Finish." Aided in part by its acquisition of Symbios in 1998, LSI Logic's total worldwide ASIC revenues grew 29.1%, which represented the largest annual growth among the market leaders. By contrast, the worldwide ASIC market declined 7% in 1998 as part of an overall slowdown in the semiconductor industry. The ASIC market includes cell-based ICs, gate arrays, and programmable logic devices (PLDs). "System companies want to work with ASIC suppliers that can offer system solutions and that can demonstrate system knowledge to their specific application, and this is tough to do without a vertical market orientation," said Bryan Lewis, Director and Principal Analyst of GartnerGroup's Dataquest ASIC/SLI Service. LSI Logic focuses on six vertical markets, including networking, telecom/wireless, computer, consumer, storage components and storage systems. In the merchant standard cell market, LSI Logic was also ranked the leading supplier by Dataquest, with cell-based revenue growth rising 62% from the prior year. "Most successful suppliers had a differentiated product aimed at the high-end of the market, targeting system level integration," Mr. Lewis said in the report. LSI Logic recently announced that it had shipped its 500th CoreWare(R) design, a level of performance unmatched in the industry. "By delivering 500 CoreWare-based designs, LSI has demonstrated tangible and measurable proof that it is the leader in technology as well as market share," said Bruce Entin, vice president of marketing at LSI Logic.
