The local disk is used as it is now on all desktops. It holds the OS and the applications that the user wants to run. This provides for guaranteed uptime and performance; unlike the thin client model there is less dependance on server/network.

A "Smart Update" utility could run on the client periodically (or at boot time) to ensure the user has the latest local images/patches.
