I agree with jla that we need to resist liberal non- judgmentalism. On the other hand, we have to be careful, since there are limits to our knowledge, and we are in a better position to judge the action than the actor, about whom we should redouble our caution. Finally, I think that when matters are debatable, it is appropriate to cut your guys some slack, and advocate on their behalf. Therefore, I think that we should uphold American traditions as much as we can, and be as gentle in our criticism of our ancestors as we can be, but that we should set ourselves against such sins as racism, and rejoice at progress made to get past it...
