You know, Christopher, I have read some really extraordinary posts on SI -- beautifully written, full of fire, truly moving...

I suspect that the people who wrote them were writing at the top of their form. But not because they took extra pains with their posts; indeed, they may have taken fewer pains than usual. Posting in cyberspace is almost the same thing as conversing; and the best cyberspace writing has the same spontaneous, perhaps careless, but vivid and unstudied quality that the best conversation has.

Just one woman's opinion.

Joan

Must it be an either-or?

Not at all. Writing must be correct to be beautiful, but correct writing is not always beautiful. Anything said as well as it can be said can be beautiful.

Correcting your writing is not just a matter of correcting your expression. It is often a question of refining your thought: if you didn't express it as well as you could, you probably didn't think it as well as you could.

Messages on SI, generally correct, since beautiful generally takes more care, and these are one-shot quickies, hit 'em and move on.

You realize, of course, that this is exactly what Terrence says when called to task for his writing...;-)

You wrote at least one tour de force post on a certain thread that shall be nameless that was surely written and edited with care... it was gorgeous
