I think you had to live through the Great Depression, which I did not, to really understand those times. Thank you, but I read a lot. I am quite a bit younger than that...in fact a lot younger than that. When first elected, Roosevelt represented the "New Deal" with work programs(WPA) and the Social Welfare Program for the elderly (SS). Yes, SS was a concept to aid America's elderly, but it has been modified many times since with the latest being the addition of Medicaid/Medicare. The latest issue of Reader's Digest has a very good article on the misuse of these funds. I suggest you get it, and read it. It will shock you.
