Mariner, Msft and First Data Corp (FDC) have a joint venture in electronic bill presentation and payment. I have heard system is being tested.

FDC is the biggest credit card processor both in the U.S. and Internationally.

Anybody following this?

Regards,

John

mariner,

A while back I brought up the subject of electronic bill presentment and payment as the possible next "killer app." I see Checkfree has gone through a decent correction of late.

You're probably aware that it is due primarily to a consortium of three large banks, all of whom I think were customers of CheckFree, offering services that investors feel will eliminate the need for CheckFree's services. CheckFree immediately issued a press release that those banks will still need CheckFree. I don't follow the company so I don't have an opinion.

A killer app that has been showing up on my radar screen a lot lately is procurement software for businesses. There's probably not a company on the planet that couldn't use it, even the very small ones. If a gorilla emerges, it will be a huge one. (Don't ask for ideas about companies that sell it because I'm clueless. :)

Mariner and thread, regards to electronic bill presentment. I am concerned that the barriers to entry are insufficient to keep out dozens of new competitors. Lately, I am seeing lots of evidence of major banks and utilities moving into this space. You also have Intuit and MSFT in the arena. I don't know if this is contributing to Checkfree's difficulty, but I suspect it is a major factor.

Regards,
Tom

NTAP and EMC are both storage solution plays in the sense that they have proprietary software that enables storage hardware to communicate with multiple vendors' CPUs. I am long both companies.

Trailing 4Q revenue for EMC is $4.6 billion and growing at an annual rate of 36%.

Trailing 4Q revenue for NTAP is $289 million and growing at an annual rate of 74%.
