Nortel Results Expected To Meet Analysts' Forecasts
By Lydia Zajc

TORONTO (Reuters) - Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE:NT - news) is expected to meet analysts' forecasts for its second quarter earnings, but observers are more worried about what's in store for the big communications equipment maker for the rest of the year.

Analysts, polled by First Call research house in New York, forecast average earnings of 50 cents a share for Nortel, one of the world's largest companies dealing with the transfer of data, voice and video over telecommunications lines.

Predictions range from a low of 48 cents a share to a high of 53.

Michael Urlocker, an analyst at Scotia Capital Markets who forecast earnings of 53 cents a share, said Monday that he expects few surprises from Nortel, based in Brampton, Ontario.

''I'm expecting strong performance out of their broadband, fiber-optics business, and I'm expecting a bit of a return to growth in their wireless business. And their wireless business was pretty bad last quarter,'' Urlocker said.

Analyst Robert Wilkes at Brown Brothers Harriman said that company watchers are more concerned about what lies ahead for Nortel.
