Les, I am not sure how accurate these figures really are. Are these not derived from taking total consumption and subtracting it from total income? But I do not think that they include any "savings" going into normal retirement plans (401 k and such), nor consumption which is fueled by sales of "overinflated" assets such as stock and real estate. Of course, the latter might be "fleeting", but for the time being, the increase in the assets side of the equation might allow for this consumption to increase without transferring debt accumulation from the government to the private sector.

It might be interesting to see what the average "debt to equity" ratio trend has been for the last few years for "average" American consumer.
