TOKYO -- The surge in demand for semiconductors used in personal computers and other information-technology equipment is likely to continue for at least three years, according to the president of the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association.

"There's a tremendous amount of consumption -- we're still in the early stages of the opportunity," said George Scalise. He noted that about 110 million personal computers are expected to be sold this year world-wide, compared with 90 million last year.

Worldwide PC Shipments Rise 27% in 2nd Qtr, Lifted by Cheap PCs

Framingham, Massachusetts, July 26 (Bloomberg) -- Worldwide
personal computer shipments rose 27 percent in the second
quarter, as consumers were lured by cheap PCs and rebate offers
from Internet access providers that made some machines free.

U.S. shipments rose 35 percent, according to International
Data Corp., a Framingham, Massachusetts, research firm. Dell
Computer Corp. almost overtook Compaq Computer Corp. as the No. 1
PC maker in the U.S., as the two shipped almost the same number
of machines in the second quarter.
