This last set of messages provides an interesting snapshot -- many of us have had bad experiences with traditional banks, many of us are looking for alternatives. I have literally developed "bank rage" at both Bank One and Chase because of unbelievably poor customer service. On Thursday I spent two hours on the phone with Bank One trying to reach the correct department to deal with a credit fraud issue, only to be given incorrect information and then get cut-off in the middle of the conversation. You can never get back to the person you were speaking with because the hook-ups go all over the country and no one knows who anyone else is. When I was given a special "trouble-shooter" number, for problems no one else could deal with, I got a recording at 1 pm on a Thursday telling me to call during regular business hours. Finally I reached some moron of a rep. who told me it was not the bank's fault because they had 20,000 phone lines and so one had to expect problems.

So far, NTBK has solved all of these issues, but for those of you who want ofx, I guess the brokers are the way to go. That never occurred to me even though I have Fidelity bill pay, and I went to NTBK. The real question is, other than atm networks, why do we need banks at all?
