eims, it was the rule and maybe it has changed but I had not heard that. You can't borrow a stock that is not marginable, ie., that is not allowed in your margin account, therefore you should not be allowed to short stocks on the BB. The rule used to be no shorting under $5 in the USA.

If the rules hav changed then I have missed many good shorts.

I've shorted stocks below $5 at Datek. Datek puts a NS symbol near the ticker for stocks that aren't available to short. IMO Datek's availability is OK. First started with Datek 1 year ago and at that time their reputation for availability was very good.

Edit-Just check on Datek and (as you know) they send the Motley Fool newsletter with your monthly statement. Vol2Issue4 (5/27/99) reviewed maintence requirements. For short positions below 5/share Datek requires 2.5/share or 100% maintence requirement. No mention of not being able to short issues below $5
