I couldn't believe my eyes when I chanced upon the word "RatCom". I worked on an "invention" of Richard A. Thomas' in the early 1980's at Instrumentation Laboratory in Lexington MA, where we were developing diagnostic instrumentation based on flow cytometry. He lived in Miami at the time (apparently still does).
He got some pretty hefty funding from IL (he showed me a check for $100,000 they had just handed over to him, just one of many), and the company basically got nothing in return. It wasn't all Thomas' fault that the project folded, but he definitely made out.
I hope this time his invention is a real one.
