Ron C and Thread,

This is one testimonial of a person who has had compatibility problems with CF. He is looking for a CF card to use both in a digital camera and a Cassiopeia E-105...

Message:

I went into a store today, to buy a Digital Camera.. As part of acquiring the new camera, I purchased an additional compact flash card for the camera/my 105.
I wanted to verify that it could easily be used with my 105; you know, take a picture in the camera, swap the CF into mine, pull it up using the viewer.

1st off, some of the cameras I tested wouldn't let the images be recognized in the Casio Image Viewer until I changed the date or something or other, but in most the cameras, it was fine...

2ndly, and more importantly...We stuck in a 32MB Sandisk... Fine.. he offered me a reasonably good price (Near $100), so I almost took it.., but wanted to see what the 48MB would run.

He pulled out a Simple 48MB CF, we put it in the camera.. It didn't come up, then we tried to format it (in the camera) it wouldn't even get to the menu. I took the same CF and hesitantly stuck it in my 105... it wanted to format it, but it wouldn't do so...We stuck it in another camera, same problem.

Bad CF we thought, and opened another from 48MB Simple. Same thing happened. (at this point I was glad we tried this out in the store; part of me was glad I wasn't experiencing this via mail order) A little unhappy, and a tiny bit embarrassed, the salesperson opened up a Lexar CF 70MB. I gulped at the idea of spending that much (unplanned) money on a CF. It was fine... and by the way, worked fine in the 105.

No more than 5 minutes later, as we were wrapping up my sale... someone else came in, who had bought the same camera as mine, carrying two of the 48MB Simple's. He had the same problem. The Manager took the Simple's off the shelf.

Short version: 70MB Lexar worked fine, as did the 32MB Sandisk's; the 48MB Simples.. no way..

I think this goes to show that SanDisk has gone out of its way with product testing to insure that a single CF solution works across platforms. It appears that the controller in some CF cards will not allow 100% compatibility in all devices. It is this type of reputation that could wreck a product's reputation, especially if there are product returns/recalls or if the retailer pulls the product off the shelf.
