The migrants were going on about their chillies and one of them asked if we knew why Mexicans don't die from heart attacks. I jumped in and suggested that once they get their drivers license they don't live long enough to get heart disease. He gave me a serious look and said " Can't fool you." and handed me a beer.

There is yet a fear in minorities, I think particularly in blacks, that white folk, deep down, really wish they weren't here. And the fear is warranted, I think. It will not disappear by use of jokes and such things. In other words, jokes are not adequate vehicles to bridge ethnic gaps. Usually they are forced and cause more discomfort than anything when used in this way. I prefer to use language, music, food then jokes. When the gap has been bridged significantly, then one can pretty much say anything, and the other guy will know its all in the interest of making the connection even tighter. People can relax and enjoy your company, instead of wondering if you really hate them. I don't hate no dang people. Heck. It would be one dang sad country if we had only whites here. I love the dang variety. Love it. I just wanna see the different groups accept a common ethic.
