max- although my perspective on the xDSL/cable modem landscape is not as qualified as many others in the SI universe- I see room for both these technologies as viable solutions to the last-mile hurdle. The inexorable drive for broadband capacity will 'temporarily'(5-10 years) be accomplished with a mosaic of technologies (xdsl, cable, mircowave, etc...) and will inevitably culminate in the promised land of the "fiber sphere"(10-15 years?). As investments xdsl has had a bumpy ride for the past 3 years, an obvious result of their tandem existence with the RBOCs- there are some signs that the telcos are beginning to realize their imminent demise and sizable deployments are promised. Although the cable companies have their own shortcomings (i.e. mismanagement, monopolistic complacency, etc...), cable is getting the spotlight on the street- I would focus on cable right now, and hold off on xdsl until the RBOCs show signs of a serious commitment- fwiw- jeremic
