Eric, the bulk of the value proposition as I see it is in the backoffice logistics area for any etail business... of course I am biased I realize but thats my view.

Plenty of people design websites I agree and it certainly isn't rocket science. The problem is the manufacturing and logistics software behind the scenes that allows for reductions of 1% of cos where your competition doesn't have that advantage. In that way you put your competition out of business when you are selling goods with razor thin profit margins. Only a few companies have really done backoffice well (Dell), and the field is littered with failures... in my view it is the personnel that makes the difference and the people that can do this don't work at IBM for a salary currently.. they are generally consulting, or can be lured with option packages.

Compaq for years tried to come up on Sap manufacturing and logistics software and was never able to pull it off. Sun micro is in the same boat (not able to implement manufacturing software) and for that reason I believe Sun will eventually lose to Dell. Sun in fact is a two-time loser, some will remember in the 80s the Sun manufacturing software meltdown that caused their internal operations to cease (sounds like they need better leadership in that area).
