What's good enough for Rhett Butler is good enough for me, Ish! <g>

No, seriously, I'd like to tell you a story about my long-gone youth. At the age of eleven, I arrived at an ultra-ultra-ultra-progressive school. My only previous boarding school experience had been at a convent school -- at a nunnery, in short. It was -- ahem! -- a very different sort of place than the school I was now attending.

Well, within a couple of days my dorm-mates, a very hard-boiled bunch of girls, if I do say so, had made a couple of bets.

One was: when will she finally take a bath? (The nuns had taught us: "Never let another little girl see your bah-dee." And there was only one tub here for twelve girls, right smack in the middle of the bathroom, with no curtains!!!)

The seond one was: When will she say a curse word?

If I remember correctly, nobody won the first bet. They finally just lost patience with me, filled up a tub, and tossed me into it with all my clothes on.

Somebody DID win the second bet (forget exactly who). One day, driven to exasperation, and surrounded with a fog of bad example, I came out with -- "Damn!" Oh, jubilation! Oh, joyful jumpings and shriekings! What a celebration there was that night! I think there was even some coca-cola....

And I didn't go to Hell!

And never since have I worried about being improper. And "improper" is by no means the same thing as "impolite," anyway. Saying "the hell with it" or "who gives a damn" or even (even!!) "oh, sh**!" when you drop something on your toe is not "impolite," because it is not aimed at anyone. Calling somebody a "damned fool" or a "hellhound" or a "sh**head" is impolite, because the purpose of doing it is to offend other people personally. In fact, you don't even have to use "naughty" words to do that: calling others idiots or lunatics or liars or whatever, is just as effective, IMO.

Joan

So...I have never thought it "impolite" to say things like "the hell with it"

More on the use of "damn."

Well, times do change. You must be pretty long in the tooth yourself, Ish! ;-)

Couldn't resist looking up "damn" in the dictionary -- The American Heritage Dictionary -- and, whaddyaknow, "damn" is no longer even considered a cuss word! And that is according to the 1969 edition, which came out 30 years ago! Lookee here, at the definition of "damn" as a noun:

(informal)The least valuable bit; a jot; [as in] don't give a damn; not worth a damn
