Ken, I've asked my Nortel reps to give me more information on the Shasta stuff. It was my impression that it was a software-based platform, or tool set, designed to allow carriers the ability to more effectively administer their edge and access gear, and not something that would be sold directly to users. I'll post more when I get it. Frank

The Shasta product is a Service Selection Gateway (SSG) or Subscriber Management System (SMS). From this platform you administer your users. It should provide the possibility to for security, billing, service privision etc. In the PSTN the OSS does this.

The SMS/SSG, has ADSLs users in the front end and ISP's at the back end. So any ADSL user could connect to any ISP he wants. If tomorrow the ADSL user changes his ISP, the operator would reconfigure his database at the SMS/SSG.

It should also -using the SMS/SSG- be possible for me as a user to have -over the same ADSL- a private connection to an ISP for my wife and have a connection to my employer's intranet.
